ABOUT ME
I am a born servant to the people, and it started from a very young age. However, I didn’t really see my calling until I joined the Navy back in 2004. Most look at me as a fitness fanatic or a health nut, but my journey to get to this point in my life and career was a rough road to travel. I started out as a very small child that had chronic asthma. I remember going to the hospital so many times that if I had to have a family member take me to an appointment, I could tell them which way and how far. I was put on a steroid inhaler to help with the asthma attacks that came more often than not. The down side to this medication was it made me gain an unnecessary amount of weight in my younger years. Fast forward a few years to 5-10 years old, I am now cured from asthma but considered obese. Imagine how your self-esteem would be if you were blessed to be cured and now faced with the issue of uncontrollable weight gain. I was in a bully class 101 and it was designed to make me tough because I don't believe in playing the victim. The one part of this class that I enjoyed was the test. See, my test was not about the pen and the pad, but about the spirit, mind, and body. I was in this class to be able to understand that the world was not fair and may never be, but that your responses to the curriculum the class handed to you would mold and dictate your present and future.
I didn't let the illness, nor the obesity take me down. I found ways to help myself fight through the pain and the adversity I would face. I had many outlets, but none like working out. Physical training is a tool that you can use for all emotional distress, to shape, form, rehabilitate, correct, and most importantly redirect energy from negative to positive.
Now, as a servant I found an outlet that kept me grounded strictly for me, or so I thought, but it's funny how the Lord builds your path from day one to truly serve others. I would always say I could not stand people, but the real reason was I could not stand peoples actions and choices in life. I just couldn’t understand them, but I didn't want to take the time out either.
I remember the very first person I helped with health and fitness was a young lady that was serving with me in the Navy. She had two physical fitness failures and in the Navy three strikes you are out. She was very hysterical about the slight idea of being discharged because she did not know how to help herself and to be honest neither did I. I just took key concepts that I knew worked, modified them for her and showed her how to do them properly.
A month later she passed her test, but it didn't stop there. I had become her coach and even though we worked on opposite shifts her dedication made me dedicate my time to helping her further better herself.
I learned something from this young lady that day, and it has stuck with me since then. There will always be hope for everyone as long as you take the time to listen , because you could have the tools to help or at least point them in the direction they need to accomplish whatever it is they need done.
This would happen sporadically throughout my array of career paths. No matter what I did to survive, I was consistently hit with fitness questions and listening to life journeys to give recommendations. But my hindrance was I still kept the same mindset of not being able to stand peoples ways. And in return I received a persistent question of “what was my excuse?”. I had a fear of actually enjoying what I was doing and debunking my own theory about people and now I was forced to face myself, which we all know is the hardest thing to do. One day in my time of working in the Oilfield, I was helping my crew with meal prepping, fitness and life tips, and my co-worker asked, “ Why did you choose to work in the oilfield?, you have a lot to offer in this world.” At that moment the trigger went off in my head. I was finally unblinded and realized the benefit behind what I was doing, and it pushed me to go learn more about the body, the mind and the spirit. After that moment I decided to embark on the journey to become a certified personal trainer and embrace my true calling. And from there I have been blessed to witness many individuals grow and break down barriers and push past limitations that they never knew were possible.
